Vampire stories have been a tradition in writing and Ellen Maze carries on that tradition with a new take on an old story. Jack Dawn is a vampire who is a member of the race of Rakum and they have been spreading evil through the world since the beginning of time. Beth Rider, a bestselling author, has caused Jack to again bring his hate to the forefront with the release of her new book. Dawn sees the message in the book as a treat to his kind and thereby decides that Rider must die. Michael Stone, Dawn's proselyte, contacts Rider who is both beautiful and innocent because he cannot understand why she has to die and he decides to protect her from vampiric lust. What a wonderful read this is. Probably this is because this is a new approach to an old story. It challenges faith and it gives us a believable look at vampires. The novel takes the point of view that society is evil and this is what corrupts.
The characters are solid and well drawn and this is the kind of story that could actually happen; especially the self-examination. This is not about the thirst for blood but it is about the thirst for truth. It is one of those books that pulls you in and will not let go even after it is finished--a true page turner.
· Finally, an author has hit upon a really new idea which intrigues the "vampire" enthusiast and challenges the adequacy of the faith of the religious crowd. Within the 340 pages of Ellen Maze's book: Rabbit: Chasing Beth Rider we are given a believable beginning for the vampire race and exposed to the contortions of that evil society without soiling one's sensibilities in the standards of the trade; lust, porn, and gore. Mrs. Maze's thesis of faith-based battling of evil challenged my views of my own theological adequacy. I tackled this novel with the intent to find fault with it's theology but came away seeing "the plank" in my own eye. The depth of the characters, the solid theology, a this-could-really-happen storyline, and the self-examination brought about by this reading left me wanting to meet these people, help their efforts, and encounter their God. · AWESOME! Like watching a movie in my head! have never really been one to read much. Although I love vampire, thriller and horror stories- I was the one who would rather see the movie than read the book. Well, this book CHANGED all the rules for me. I could not put the thing down once I began reading it and I did not want it to end. This book is entertaining and keeps your interest and at the edge of your seat the whole time. With the author's writing style, this novel was like watching a movie - I could "see" everything as it happened. · MORE PLEASE!!! I am in love with these characters. They are all struggling against what they've always believed and what they are starting to learn of the Truth. The main character, Beth Rider, is strong and her faith can move mountains; but my heart goes out to the Rakum (the vampires). For hundreds of years (thousands for some), they are raised in a brutal environment meant to make them into powerful deities bound to walk the earth for eternity. Then one by one, after reading Beth Rider's book, they start to question what they were taught from. Their leader is demonic and has never let on their true nature -- their true spiritual origins -- so are they to blame? Ms. Maze has created a new storyline for the undead and placed them into a position we must have all wondered about at one time or the other. What happens to the soul of the vampire?
